Can Elon Musk become President of the United States? This is not the first time that the prospect of seeing Elon Musk run for the American presidency has been raised. But can this be true someday?
Let’s discuss this!
Can Elon Musk be the US President Someday?
Elon Musk, President of the United States? This prospect was raised by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who published a list of so-called mind-blowing “forecasts” for 2023 on the social network Twitter. But the boss of the electric cars could not stand in the presidential election as it stands.
Besides this prediction, the Russian President also made some other mind-blowing predictions for 2023, according to which,
- A war would break out between France and a “Fourth Reich” (sic) made up of Germany, Poland, the Baltic States, or Central European countries.
- The United Kingdom would rejoin the European Union and collapse in the aftermath.
- The United States would face a civil war, and California and Texas would become independent countries.
These are some of the alleged predictions that Medvedev made along with the prospect of Elon Musk becoming the US President, which is, according to the latter, ‘the most absurd.’
Therefore, it is difficult to know if these provocative words are to be taken at face value. The one who is today vice-president of the Security Council of the Russian Federation evokes, in particular, the fate of Elon Musk, one of the richest men in the world and now boss of Twitter. This one could still, according to Dmitry Medvedev, “win the presidential election in a certain number of states.”
When Elon first took to Twitter, his ‘super fans’ encouraged him to run for the Presidency in 2024, according to Business Insider. In addition, Elon Musk regularly addressed political topics on Twitter, which added to the fuel. All these elements regularly lead Internet users to wonder if the founder of Tesla and the space sector company SpaceX could one day try to become President of the US.
So, could Elon Musk run for President? No. And it is the American Constitution that says so. Very precisely in the fifth clause of the first section of article II of the text drawn up in 1787, ratified in 1788, and which has applied since 1789, according to which anyone who’s not a citizen by birth or anyone under the age of 35 who has not resided in the US for fourteen years is not eligible for the office of President.
However, Elon Musk is now an American citizen but was born in South Africa on June 28, 1971, in Pretoria. He then studied in Canada and then in the US, where he settled. This question of the place of birth of a candidate for the Presidency of the US has already been mentioned in the past. Barack Obama, elected for the first time in 2008, had produced his birth certificate, stipulating that he was indeed born on American territory, following “controversies” around his country of origin.
In 2010, former bodybuilder and actor Arnold Schwarzenegger, ex-governor of California, was interested in running for the US presidency but couldn’t as he was born in Austria.
Final Thoughts!
Thus, Elon cannot become the US President. Although the Constitution can be amended like it has been 27 times in the past, the procedure is cumbersome. Congress can propose an amendment when it is deemed necessary by two-thirds of the two chambers or when two-thirds of the state’s legislature requests it, which can then be ratified by three-fourths of the latter. Whether or not Elon Musk can someday be the US president seems to be the most unreasonable prediction, as he calls it on his Twitter account.
